10 POINTERS AS YOU START A NEW YEAR

As the new school year gets underway, here are ten simple pointers to help get your semester off to a great start!

1. Don't Be Nervous
Everyone was new at one time or another.

2. Be Yourself
Different isn't a bad thing.

3. Make New Friends
Make friends with someone outside your usual social circle. Most likely you won't have classes with all of your friends, so meet someone new. Even if it's hard.

4. Know Your Schedule Before School Starts
Go to Freshman Orientation. No matter how lame it sounds. You don't want to be the one standing in the hall, looking at your schedule.

5. Try. Seriously.
Most grades come from a combination of tests and homework. Do both. Also, don't think you're too cool to do your work, or too cool to care, because you won't be cool when you don't have enough credits to graduate with the rest of your class.

6. Take Pride in Good Attendance
In fact, just try and be there every day. Missing school when it's not necessary creates more work for you in the long run.

7. Respect Your Teachers
Teachers are humans, too. Your attitude can quickly establish your reputation for good or bad.

8. Use Proper Grammar When Talking, Typing, and Writing
Don't be the student who turns in an essay that looks like a long text message: "My SA 2day is abt my summer."

9. Don't Stand and Talk in the Halls
First, you won't have time. Second, you will annoy the other students that have to go around you. Go to class. High school isn't like it is in the movies.

10. Do Something
You're not too cool for clubs and activities. School is so much more than just going to class and studying so get involved!
