SOCIAL STUDIES UPDATES

As students prepare to select their courses for the 2017-2018 school year, please be aware of some significant changes to social studies curriculum. The following changes will go into effect for 2017-2018:

  • Government & Law 1 will no longer be offered.
  • World Cultures and World Geography will be combined into a single, semester-long elective with the title of World Geography.
  • World History 1 and World History 2 will be offered every other year on a rotating basis. World History 1 will be the option for 2017-2018.
  • Economics (Honors) will be available to students in grades 10-12.
  • Sociology (Honors) will be available to students in grades 10-12.
  • Based on a new state requirement, a semester-long Civics course will be open to all students. Passing this course is a graduation requirement starting with the Class of 2020 and beyond.
  • Current History will be available to students in grades 10-12.
  • Government & Law 2 (Honors) will be available to students in grades 10-12 -- Government & Law 1 is no longer a prerequisite.
  • A new year-long AP Economics course will be offered (pending board approval) to students in grades 10-12.

Course descriptions can be found in the MSHS Course Guide. If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact Mr. Keith Pogue, Head of the Social Studies Department.
